Date : from June 1st to July 15th
Location : Aquarium Tropical de la Porte Dore - Paris, Ocanopolis - Brest, France
Expected number of participants : more than 250
Nature of participants : general public
Keywords : exhibition, oceanography, marine species, climate change

Summary

This 21 panels exhibition presents the current IFREMER (French Institute for Exploration and Exploitation of the Sea) researches about the links between ocean and climate. Every panel includes a big picture or map, and a short text which explains the scientific problem and give some information about current research programs.

In a first part, the oceanographic equipment is presented: at sea (ships, buoys), from space, participative sciences.

Three images present the marine data, their treatment and what they are used for: research, operational oceanography, ocean forecast.

Then the consequences of the climate change are mentioned: sea currents, sea ice, marine species, coasts, gas hydrates

The exhibition was prepared within the framework of the 21th Session of the Conference of the Parties to the UNFCCC. It will be presented on different places in France between May 21st and the end of 2015. Between June 1st and July 15th, it will be presented

- in the Tropical Aquarium of Paris, Porte Dore

- on the stopovers of the Tour de France for the Climate: Brest from June 5th till July 15th, and Cherbourg from July 5th to July 30th.

Key outcomes

Ifremers photography exhibition Climate is changing, ocean too was realized in the context of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, to be held in Paris late 2015, among related scientific and media events.

The exhibition highlights the need for a better understanding of the oceanic movements to better forecast future changes. The proliferation of marine data is essential to produce more accurate models and predict the future on the short, medium and long term state of the ocean.

Climate change also strongly impacts the oceans, species living there, as well as coastlines that are subject to an important increase of risks.

Reports

20 posters present the links between ocean and climate, through the research activities led by Ifremer. The exhibition is structured around two themes:

1/ Evolution of the oceans state characterization: oceans observations, facilities, data acquisition, treatment and use
2/ Showing recorded or assumed global change impacts on oceans and marine biodiversity: sea ice, CO2 absorption, coastal risks, impacts on plankton and marine fauna
